Self Esteem
or self concept, is a reflection of how we value self and how important we believe we are in the world. It develops slowly over time.
Confident & Secure
Children that feel good about who they are can challenge themselves and learn from their mistakes through the lens of a growth mindset. They are more likely to stand up for themselves and ask for help when they need it.
Children that struggle to feel good about who they are or their place in life may be more vulnerable to peer pressure, develop self-defeating ways to deal with life challenges and lack hope in their abilities to succeed. It is easier to quit activities, avoid trying new things, lack effort in school or act silly to deflect their anxiety about their self-worth and abilities. They may have a hard time finding anything they like about themselves or things they are good at because they do not trust their own feelings or opinion.
When I work with building a sense of self worth and value in children to increase self esteem we focus on:
Teaching skills to ‘love yourself’
Discovering personal strengths
Growth mindsets
Exploration of feelings and emotions
Increase positive emotional vocabulary
Creating positive habits for success
Promoting empowerment
